Turnover at the Sa Sa Ladies' Purse race day yesterday hit HK$1.625 billion, making it the highest for this season.
The highlight was, of course, the 1,800-meter seventh race that saw the John Size-trained Ensued, with Karis Teetan in the saddle, claim a thrilling victory.
The atmosphere at the Sha Tin racecourse was buzzing, with 35,000 people, including political and business elites, turning up.
Actress and singer Charlene Choi Tsoek-jin, this year's ambassador, added a touch of glamour to the day, which is celebrated for its luxurious lifestyle appeal.
According to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the HK$1.625 billion turnover for the day underscores the significance of the event in the racing calendar.
The win in the eponymous event sees Ensued take a crucial step toward the upcoming 2024 Longines Hong Kong International Races on December 8.
Following its start from barrier 13, Ensued benefited startegically from a mid-race shift by Moments In Time that effectively split the field.
Settling in fifth position behind the leader, All For St Paul's, Ensued found clear running at the top of the straight.
With 200 meters to go, he surged ahead, ultimately winning by three quarters of a length in a time of 1:46.41 seconds ahead of La City Blanche and Chancheng Glory.
Despite high hopes, favorites Massive Sovereign, ridden by Zac Purton, and rising star Karma, with Alexis Badel aboard, both failed to secure a podium finish.
Ensued's victory comes with a bonus of HK$1.5 million and prize money of HK$2.35 million and brings his record to four wins and two minor placings from nine starts.
Owner Ada Wong Yin-man's father, Wong Chung-mat, said Ensued has improved since his last race, when he finished fourth in a 2,000-meter event.
Size, with 12 Hong Kong trainers' championships to his name, said "the race unfolded perfectly for Ensued," with the field's split allowing the steed to take advantage as they approached the turn.
Teetan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to ride for Size and the support he has received.
This race day was not just about the competition; it was a celebration of horse racing's allure, drawing together enthusiasts and dignitaries alike in an event that showcased both the sport and the vibrant atmosphere surrounding it.
